Moldova implements new selection rules for deputy school directors

The Ministry of Education and Research of Moldova is implementing new provisions of the Education Code regarding the appointment of deputy directors in public general education institutions. The new regulations aim to ensure a transparent and competitive selection process based on professional competencies.

At the time of the legislative changes, over 65% of deputy directors in public general education institutions held their positions without being selected through a competition. Approximately 39% were employed for an indefinite period, and 27% served in an interim capacity. Under the new law, individual labor contracts for affected deputy directors will terminate on September 7, 2026.

The rules apply to deputy directors who have been in their positions for more than five years, including interim periods, as well as those appointed for an indefinite period. To ensure continuity of school activities, school directors will appoint interim deputy directors while organizing competitions to fill the vacancies.
