Moldova introduces new urban mobility laws and child road safety initiatives

The Moldovan government has approved a draft law on sustainable urban mobility to address rising vehicle numbers, which have grown from 1.2 million to over 1.35 million in less than two years. The legislation introduces new regulations for traffic organization, public transport development, and paid parking management. It also empowers local authorities to manage abandoned vehicles; cars left in one location for at least six months may be identified as abandoned, with owners given 15 days to reclaim them before the vehicle can be transferred to local government ownership.

In a separate initiative focused on child safety, the “Beyond the Goal: A Safe Path to Sport and Play” project has been launched in Moldova. Organized by EASST and the Automobil Club din Moldova in partnership with the Moldovan Football Federation and other entities, the program aims to improve road safety near football clubs and parks. The initiative, part of the “Legacy for the Future” program by the UEFA Foundation for Children and adidas Foundation, specifically addresses barriers to sports participation for girls. This follows 2024 data showing that 447 children under 17 were killed or injured in road accidents in Moldova, with approximately 40% of victims being girls.
