Moldova's average life expectancy rises to 72.8 years in 2025

The National Bureau of Statistics reported that the average life expectancy in the Republic of Moldova reached 72.8 years in 2025, an increase of 0.8 years from the previous year. The rise was driven by a reduction in deaths among both men and women. Women now live on average 77.2 years, nearly nine years longer than men, whose life expectancy is 68.4 years. While the gap mirrors global patterns, Moldova's overall expectancy remains below the European Union average, where women live about 84 years and men about 79 years.

Experts attribute the gender difference to a mix of biological factors and lifestyle differences, noting that men are more likely to engage in riskier occupations and health behaviors. The data underscores ongoing demographic challenges, including an aging population and a historically low fertility rate.
