Moldova marks 75th anniversary of 1949 Bessarabian deportations

On the night of 5–6 July 1949, Soviet authorities forced roughly 35,000 Bessarabians onto cattle trains bound for Siberia and Kazakhstan. Two‑thirds of those deported were women and children, and the operation aimed to enforce collectivisation and suppress resistance among the rural population. A later wave on 1 April 1951 targeted over 5,900 Jehovah’s Witnesses from the region.

To honour the victims, the Moldovan government organised a series of commemorative events in Chişinău, including a ceremony at the Monument to the Victims of Communist Deportations, a concert‑requiem by Select Quartet, and speeches by President Maia Sandu, Parliament Speaker Igor Grosu, Culture Minister Cristian Jardan and representatives of former deportees.

The remembrance highlights the enduring trauma of Soviet forced‑relocation policies for the people of present‑day Moldova and underscores the country’s effort to preserve this painful chapter of its history.
