Moldova Ministry of Education approves new primary school evaluation methodology

The Ministry of Education and Research in Moldova has approved a new Methodology for the evaluation of learning outcomes in primary school classes. The document introduces several key changes, including the introduction of the “Excellent” descriptor and the implementation of a 5 to 10 grading scale for fourth-grade students in core subjects such as Mathematics, Foreign Languages, and Romanian or Russian language and literature.

To reduce student pressure, the new regulations limit students to no more than two formative or summative evaluations per week. Additionally, the total number of evaluations has been reduced by over 100 compared to previous projections. Summative evaluations will no longer be required for subjects such as Physical Education, Plastic Education, Technological Education, Personal Development, Moral-Spiritual Education, and optional disciplines.

Valentina Olaru, State Secretary of the Ministry of Education and Research, stated that the goal is to provide a clear framework for teachers to track individual progress and help children understand their achievements and areas needing support.
