Moldova Ministry of Health to reform doctor distribution system

The Moldovan Ministry of Health is planning to reform the distribution system for young doctors following their graduation. While the residency system will remain, officials intend to move away from simply filling vacant positions. Health Minister Alexandru Gasnaș stated that new assignments will consider the specific services offered by hospitals and the ability of doctors to practice their chosen specialties effectively.

Under the proposed reorganization, specialists such as surgeons or intensive care doctors will be placed in facilities that possess the necessary patient volume, equipment, and teams to support complex interventions. The Ministry aims to establish a clearer concept of medical service concentration by the end of December, potentially focusing acute care in specific institutions while moving chronic disease management closer to local communities.

Broader discussions regarding the healthcare system highlight ongoing challenges, including the migration of specialists and the difficulty of attracting young doctors to rural areas. Despite financial incentives, issues such as working conditions, professional development, and the high cost of treatments for patients remain significant hurdles in the reform process.
