Moldova negotiates natural gas supplies with Ukraine
Moldova is in discussions with Ukraine regarding potential natural gas supplies to mitigate rising energy costs. Prime Minister Vasile Tofan stated that Ukraine's gas production and existing reserves provide a basis for favorable cooperation. These energy talks are expected to be a primary focus during the Prime Minister's upcoming visit to Kyiv.
Ukrainian Ambassador to Chișinău, Paun Rahovei, indicated that Ukraine is open to such cooperation, noting that geographical proximity could potentially reduce transport costs compared to distant suppliers. While discussions between energy ministers have been productive, commercial terms and final decisions on purchases have yet to be established.
In addition to Ukraine, Moldova is seeking to diversify its energy sources by negotiating with potential suppliers in Azerbaijan, Qatar, and Turkmenistan to secure better long-term contract conditions. This follows a significant increase in market gas prices, which reached 86 euros per megawatt-hour, up from 26 euros in January.
