Moldova plans heating compensations for 2026–2027 season

The Moldovan government is planning heating compensations for the 2026–2027 cold season, covering firewood, centralized heating, gas, and electricity. Currently, 550 million lei has been budgeted for this purpose, though Prime Minister Vasile Tofan noted that authorities are seeking additional funding from external partners to ensure more consistent support.

Minister of Labor and Social Protection Natalia Plugaru stated that officials are modeling different scenarios to determine whether to provide larger amounts to fewer households or smaller amounts to a larger number of households. The goal is to prioritize the most vulnerable families.

To prevent fraud, the government intends to tighten eligibility criteria. Prime Minister Tofan directed the Ministry of Labor to implement stricter measures to ensure that individuals with high real wealth—such as those owning expensive homes, multiple cars, or significant bank deposits—do not receive aid by reporting low official incomes or working in the informal economy.
