Republic of Moldova faces high poverty and rural education challenges

The Republic of Moldova faces significant socio-economic challenges, with reports indicating that approximately 60% of the population lives in poverty. The situation is particularly acute in rural areas, where over 40% of children live in absolute poverty.

Multidimensional poverty affects more than one-third of children in the country, impacting their access to healthcare, adequate housing, electricity, and education. Experts note that low agricultural incomes, a lack of stable employment, and insufficient infrastructure are primary drivers of this crisis. While social benefits exist, specialists argue they are inadequate to remedy the situation alone.

Proposed solutions include creating well-paid, stable jobs in rural regions, developing local economies, and improving educational and medical services. Additionally, diaspora remittances play a vital role in supporting the economy and investing in rural education, though the sector still struggles with inadequate infrastructure and a shortage of qualified personnel.
