Moldova President Maia Sandu Discusses EU Accession, Possible Union with Romania, and Russian Threats

In a detailed interview, President Maia Sandu reviewed her six‑year tenure and outlined Moldova’s strategic priorities. She confirmed that formal EU accession negotiations are slated to begin soon, with an aim to sign a membership treaty by 2028. Sandu addressed speculation about a third presidential term and emphasized the need for institutional reforms, including justice independence and anti‑corruption measures.

The president also discussed the prospect of a union with Romania, describing it as a long‑term objective that would depend on broader European integration. She warned of Russian pressure, citing a recent decree by President Vladimir Putin concerning Transnistria and reports of Russian espionage infiltrating Moldovan institutions. Sandu highlighted steps to modernise the military, including plans to develop domestic drones, and reaffirmed Moldova’s intention to cooperate with Ukraine while maintaining a neutral stance.
