Moldova President Maia Sandu to align Gagauzia election rules with national system
President Maia Sandu met with members of the Popular Assembly of Gagauzia on 20 July to address the stalled election process in the autonomous region. The discussion focused on adopting the proportional electoral system used nationwide for parliamentary, local and regional elections, as required by a recent Constitutional Court ruling that declared previous autonomous provisions unconstitutional. The presidency noted that the mixed working group’s earlier proposal could not be applied without the Assembly’s plenary approval. Parliament will soon draft amendments to the Electoral Code so that Gagauzia’s elections can be organised in the autumn under the same legal framework as the rest of Moldova. The authorities said uniform rules will guarantee equal voting conditions and advance the region’s integration into the country's political, economic and social life.
