Moldova declares 60-day energy and water state of emergency
The Parliament of Moldova has approved a 60-day state of emergency in the energy and hydrological sectors, effective September 26. The measure aims to prevent fuel shortages and ensure the continuous supply of electricity, natural gas, and heating. It also addresses a severe hydrological deficit in the Dniester and Prut river basins, which threatens the country's drinking water supply.
Prime Minister Vasile Tofan cited a “perfect storm” of overlapping risks, including regional conflicts in Ukraine and the Middle East, and a severe drought. These factors are driving up energy costs and impacting fuel availability. Authorities warned that diesel prices could potentially exceed 40 lei per liter due to international market deficits and logistical disruptions.
To mitigate the economic impact on vulnerable citizens, the government plans to revise energy compensation funds. While officials initially intended to reduce the number of beneficiaries, the rising cost of gas has prompted a plan to expand the program to cover more than 620,000 households. Additionally, political leaders have raised concerns regarding potential price spikes for bottled water during the hydrological crisis.
