Moldova reports rabies in dogs and African swine fever in wild boar

The National Agency for Food Safety (ANSA) in the Republic of Moldova confirmed three animal disease outbreaks during the week of 18–25 May. One case of African swine fever was detected in a wild boar near the village of Cioara in the Hîncești district, and two separate rabies outbreaks were identified in dogs in Vălcineț (Călărași district) and in Nisporeni.

ANSA warned that the risk of further spread remains high and urged citizens to wash any bite or saliva‑contaminated wounds with soap and water, to seek immediate medical assistance, and to report aggressive animals to local food‑safety authorities. The agency also advised farmers not to use animal‑origin waste in pig feed, to purchase only certified livestock, and to avoid pork products from neighboring countries that may be confiscated. A reward of €50 is offered for each reported wild boar carcass to aid surveillance.

These measures aim to contain both the public‑health threat posed by rabies and the agricultural impact of African swine fever on domestic pig herds.
