Moldova restores citizenship to former Romanian President Traian Băsescu

Moldovan President Maia Sandu announced on 26 May 2026 that former Romanian President Traian Băsescu has again been granted Moldovan citizenship. The decision, made by presidential decree, reverses the revocation of his citizenship in 2017 by then‑president Igor Dodon and is presented as a correction of a historical injustice.

Sandu praised Băsescu’s long‑standing support for Moldova’s European integration and for aiding Moldovan citizens with scholarships and other initiatives. Băsescu responded with gratitude, reaffirming his commitment to Moldova’s EU accession and the idea of reunification with Romania. The gesture is seen as a symbolic political repair and a signal of the current administration’s pro‑European stance.
