Moldova Renovates Student Dormitory with World Bank Funding

Over 200 students from the Ion Creangă Pedagogical University will move into a renovated dormitory on Suceava Street in Chișinău on 1 September 2026. The renovation, funded by a €1.8 million World Bank grant under the “Higher Education in Moldova” project, provides two‑ or three‑room apartments for 2–3 students each, each with a sanitary block, a kitchen equipped with a refrigerator and induction cooktop, and full accessibility features including a ramp, elevator and adapted rooms.

Minister of Education Dan Perciun announced that by 2030 a total of 19 student dormitories will be fully renovated, with €30 million identified for the works, aiming to create roughly 5,000 modern student accommodation places by the end of the decade. Rector Alexandra Barbăneagră called the project a strategic investment to improve student life quality, and World Bank economist Ion Gonța confirmed the Bank’s continued support for modernising student infrastructure. Project coordinator Sergiu Harea highlighted the importance of the investment for the country’s future.
