Moldova seeks alternative gas suppliers to secure energy supply

Moldova is actively seeking to secure its natural gas supply for the upcoming heating season amid rising market prices. Prime Minister Vasile Tofan has announced that the government will pursue long-term contracts with alternative suppliers, including Qatar, Azerbaijan, and Turkmenistan, while explicitly excluding Russia from negotiations.

This strategy follows a significant increase in gas costs; while the budget was based on 30 euro/MWh, market rates have exceeded 84 euro/MWh. To mitigate the impact on citizens, the government is looking to maximize consumer compensations and is in discussions with international partners such as Ireland, Norway, Lithuania, and Canada for potential financial support.

According to Alexei Taran, Director General of ANRE, Moldova currently holds 56 million cubic meters in emergency reserves, enough for approximately 10 days of domestic consumption. Additionally, the state supplier Energocom has already contracted roughly 90% of the volumes required through the spring, though these contracts guarantee supply rather than fixed prices.
