Moldova seeks legislative changes for domestic arms production
Moldova’s pro-European government is seeking legislative changes to permit domestic arms production to bolster national defense. Parliament Chairman Igor Grosu stated that the focus will be on manufacturing dual-purpose equipment, such as drones, which can be utilized for national security, emergency response, and agriculture.
Grosu clarified that the intention is to produce these weapons for Moldova’s own use rather than for supply to neighboring Ukraine. The push for increased defense capabilities comes as Moldova faces security vulnerabilities, including 88 recorded violations of its airspace by drones and missiles believed to be Russian since February 2022.
President Maia Sandu has emphasized that domestic defense production is vital for the country’s future, particularly as the administration works toward joining the European Union by 2030. The government noted that significant investment is required in radar, infrastructure, and trained personnel to effectively protect the nation's airspace.
