Moldova addresses security, EU integration, and Transnistrian tensions

Moldova is facing several interconnected security and political challenges. In Tiraspol, the 'Transnistrian General Popular Forum' has announced a protest for October 23 against fiscal measures imposed by Chișinău, which authorities describe as propaganda that violates national sovereignty.

On the security front, Parliamentary President Igor Grosu has called for the establishment of a nationwide radar network and the development of a domestic defense industry, including drone production, to protect Moldovan airspace. Defense Minister Anatolie Nosatîi noted that acquiring air defense equipment remains difficult as international priorities, particularly within NATO and the EU, remain focused on supporting Ukraine.

Additionally, authorities are preparing for a potential new wave of Ukrainian refugees due to the escalating conflict. Regarding European integration, President Maia Sandu confirmed that Moldova is opening negotiations for two new EU clusters: 'Internal Market' and 'Competitiveness and Inclusive Growth.'

Domestically, economist Veaceslav Ioniță has raised concerns that the country's new administrative division into three regions may not meet the demographic requirements necessary to access European regional development funds.
