Moldova struggles to detect low-altitude drones with Soviet-era radar
Moldovan Defense Minister Anatolie Nosatîi has stated that much of the country's radar infrastructure is inherited from the Soviet era and is not designed for modern warfare. While these systems can detect high-altitude targets at long distances, they are unable to efficiently track drones flying at low altitudes of 100 to 200 meters.
Although Moldova has acquired some modern radar systems that have improved detection capabilities for recent drone incidents, they do not yet provide full territorial coverage. The government is currently seeking new acquisitions to consolidate air surveillance and defense capabilities. These purchases will depend on national budget availability and assistance from international partners.
Nosatîi noted that procurement timelines are lengthy, with deliveries often taking between two and five years due to high global demand, particularly from Ukraine. He also observed that eastern flank partners are similarly consolidating their security capabilities in response to regional threats.
