Moldova to mark 35 years of independence with special school lesson

The 2026–2027 school year in Moldova will commence on September 1 with a thematic lesson titled ‘Independence that Unites Us’. This initiative is organized for students in grades I–XII across all public and private general education institutions to mark the 35th anniversary of the proclamation of the Republic of Moldova's independence.

The Ministry of Education and Research has developed the lesson to help students understand the country's journey toward independence, reflecting on transformations occurring between 1991 and 2026. The curriculum focuses on three main pillars: ‘The Path to Independence’, ‘Symbols and Values of Independence’, and ‘Independence that Unites Us’.

Educational activities will cover defining historical events from 1989–1991, the Declaration of Independence, state symbols, the Romanian language, and democratic values such as the rule of law and civic participation. To support teachers, the Ministry of Education and Research, with assistance from the Council of Europe, has prepared a set of didactic materials.
