Moldova and Romania roll out major school modernization projects funded by EU and PNRR

In Moldova, authorities have launched a procurement process to prepare technical documentation for the reconstruction of eight model schools, including the Gimnaziul “Grigore Vieru” in Ialoveni. The initiative is part of the Model Schools Network, a strategic program of the Ministry of Education and Research backed by the World Bank, the European Union, Poland, UNDP, UNICEF, the Council of Europe Development Bank and private partners.

Separately, four Moldovan schools – in Dobrogea, Sîngera, Căinari, Cimișlia and Călărași – will receive roughly one million lei each to upgrade sanitation infrastructure. The works, financed by the European Union through Caritas Czech Republic, will benefit more than 1,200 pupils and staff by rehabilitating sanitary blocks, modernising sewage systems and improving accessibility for people with disabilities.

In Romania, the city of Iași has become the national leader in securing National Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR) funds for school upgrades, obtaining 726 million lei. The money is being used for thermal rehabilitation, modernisation and extensions at the National Colleges “Mihai Eminescu” and “Garabet Ibrăileanu” and the Liceul “Miron Costin”. Mayor Mihai Chirică said, “Iași has remained the champion in school infrastructure investment… we have already spent the PNRR funds and are moving to new projects such as sports halls, a new creche and further school extensions.”
