Moldova marks 85th anniversary of Stalinist deportations with exhibitions and denial‑sanction proposal

On 12 June 2026 Moldova commemorated the 85th anniversary of the first wave of Soviet deportations. The Ministry of Culture installed a series of historic railway cars, known as the “Train of Pain”, in Chișinău’s central square and, for the first time, in Bălţi’s railway square. The exhibition, titled “State Terror in Soviet Moldova. Scope, Victims, Perpetrators”, runs for about a month and includes documents, photographs and personal testimonies. Regional museums from Edineț and Hâncești contributed artefacts, and the event is accompanied by cultural programs, talks with historians and a memorial service.

A parallel ceremony took place in Cimișlia at the monument to victims of Stalinist repression, where local officials and citizens laid flowers and highlighted the need to preserve historical memory. During the inauguration, Parliament President Igor Grosu announced that Moldovan legislation will soon include penalties for individuals who deny the atrocities of the Stalinist regime, including the deportations and the 1946‑47 famine. The proposed sanctions form part of a broader effort to confront historical denial and reinforce democratic values.

The commemorations are presented in Romanian and English and are framed as a “culture of memory”, with officials warning that attempts to distort the history align with Russian hybrid‑war tactics.
