Moldova's ANSA launches preventive African Swine Fever plan

During 8‑15 June 2026, two outbreaks of African Swine Fever (ASF) were recorded in domestic pigs in the Cahul district, Vadul lui Isac, and a rabies case was reported in a dog in Strășeni district, Lozova. The National Agency for Food Safety (ANSA) approved a new preventive management concept for ASF via Ordinance No. 243 dated 8 June 2026. The scheme targets non‑professional pig holdings, offering voluntary animal identification, registration and basic bio‑security standards free of charge.

Veterinarians will visit farms to assess compliance, provide practical recommendations and document any shortcomings. The approach is non‑punitive; however, owners who refuse access or fail to remedy issues within the given timeframe may face enforcement under Moldova’s contravention code. Benefits for compliant owners include state compensation for disease‑related losses and permission to legally market surplus animals. ANSA also advises the public to wash any animal bite wounds thoroughly and seek medical care promptly.
