Moldova’s National Archives Publishes 1941 Deportation Lists Online

The National Archives of the Republic of Moldova (ANA) has released online the nominal lists of individuals deported from the Moldovan Soviet Socialist Republic during the June 13‑14 1941 operation. The declassified documents, originally seized by the Ministry of Internal Affairs in 2010, contain the names of more than half of the estimated 19,000 people removed in that wave and are available for download as PDFs.

The archive notes that the lists provide previously little‑known details about the deportations, including fatalities en route to Siberia or Kazakhstan and children born during transport. A press release quoted the agency: “Agenția Națională a Arhivelor ... pune la dispoziția deportaților ... și rudelor acestora, dar și tuturor celor interesați de trecutul nostru traumatic, listele pe vagoane, atâtea câte s-au păstrat, a deportaților din RSS Moldovenească din 13‑14 iunie 1941.”

These records are stored in fund R‑3397 and supplement information on three major Soviet deportation campaigns that together affected over 56,000 residents of the former RSS Moldovenească.
