Moltex Energy technology aims to recycle nuclear waste into electricity
Moltex Energy has developed a technology designed to extract energy from spent nuclear fuel using molten salts and fast neutrons. The project aims to produce up to 500 MW of electricity by repurposing what is typically considered nuclear waste.
Through its Waste To Stable Salt (WATSS) process, the technology uses pyrochemical processing to recover transuranic elements to create new fuel. This method is designed to avoid the separation of pure plutonium by keeping it mixed with other radioactive elements.
Recently, Nuclea Energy signed an agreement to acquire Moltex Energy's technological assets. This acquisition includes the Stable Salt Reactor-Wasteburner (SSR-W), the WATSS recycling system, and a portfolio of 80 patents. The project has received over 96 million Canadian dollars in combined private and public investment from Canada and the United States.
