Brazil releases R$ 64 million to mitigate El Niño impacts
Acting President Geraldo Alckmin has signed a Provisional Measure authorizing R$ 64 million in extraordinary credit to mitigate the impacts of the El Niño phenomenon in Brazil. The funds are specifically targeted at vulnerable populations and sectors heavily affected by climate instability.
Of the total amount, R$ 40 million is allocated to the Ministry of Development and Social Assistance, Family and Fight Against Hunger. These resources will support the Food Acquisition Program, aimed at purchasing and distributing food produced by family farmers to bolster food security. This initiative is expected to benefit approximately 4,000 farming families.
The remaining R$ 24 million is directed to the National Indigenous People Foundation (Funai) to support emergency actions for indigenous communities. These funds will provide essential supplies, including food and potable water, to approximately 1,300 indigenous communities across the country.
To assist with monitoring and response, the federal government has launched a dedicated digital platform. The site provides official information on El Niño, regional impacts, disaster prevention guidelines, and instructions for state and municipal authorities.
