Monaco Grand Prix penalties and Red Bull engine failure spark controversy

The FIA imposed 10‑second time penalties on Sergio Perez of Red Bull and Pierre Gasly of Alpine after the chaotic Monaco Grand Prix, where a crash involving Charles Leclerc triggered a red‑flag and a standing start. Perez’s penalty dropped him from a potential points finish, costing the Cadillac‑backed team its first F1 points, while Gasly’s penalty for exceeding the pit‑lane speed limit prompted Alpine to announce an appeal of the decision.

Red Bull team principal Laurent Mekies confirmed that Max Verstappen’s power‑unit failed during the formation lap and at the start of the race. The failure was traced to a defect in the engine slated for retirement after Monaco, and the team will replace it for subsequent events. Mekies also noted the new ADUO regulation that limits Red Bull‑Ford’s ability to introduce upgrades, offering other engine manufacturers additional development windows.

These developments have raised questions about race control consistency and the reliability of Red Bull’s power units as the championship battle intensifies.
