Monaco Grand Prix pit‑lane penalty debacle prompts driver outcry

McLaren driver Oscar Piastri said the pit‑lane speed‑limit monitoring at the Monaco Grand Prix was faulty, pointing out that seven or eight cars received penalties. He warned, “that kind of thing shouldn’t be happening in Formula 1,” adding that the penalties altered his strategy and the race outcome.

Alpine filed a “Right of Review” after Pierre Gasly was handed two five‑second penalties that stripped him of a podium. FIA stewards concluded the speed‑limit data were erroneous and annulled the penalties, restoring Gasly to third place. Other drivers, including Piastri and George Russell, keep their penalties. The Grand Prix Drivers’ Association is expected to raise the issue, highlighting concerns over the reliability of the timing system.
