Monagas health reports 30% increase in cancer cases
Oncologist César Álvarez of the Dr. Manuel Núñez Tovar University Hospital in Maturín has reported a 30% increase in cancer cases in Monagas state compared to the previous year. The most significant rises have been observed in breast, cervical, and digestive tract cancers.
Dr. Álvarez emphasized that while factors such as genetics play a role, prevention through lifestyle changes is critical. He recommended reducing stress, increasing physical activity, and avoiding processed foods high in chemicals, such as canned goods and sausages, in favor of nutritious proteins, grains, and fruits.
Medical experts advise annual mammograms for women starting between ages 30 and 35, as well as annual cytology tests to prevent cervical cancer. Monitoring family medical history is also highlighted as a vital preventive measure.
In a separate development regarding regional healthcare infrastructure, the public health system in Monagas reported conducting over 234,000 free paraclinical exams during 2026. This diagnostic coverage was facilitated through the state hospital network and Barrio Adentro centers, supported by investments in laboratory reagents and technological supplies.
