Cancer incidence and mortality in Venezuela

Overview

The Sociedad Anticancerosa de Venezuela (SAV) has projected that the country will reach 85,500 new cancer cases by the end of 2026. This projection includes approximately 234 new daily diagnoses and an estimated 34,484 annual deaths, which represents an increase of 2,484 deaths compared to 2024. Data indicates that 51.7% of new cases affect males and 47.6% affect females, with breast and cervical cancer remaining the primary causes of death for women.

In the state of Monagas, oncologists have reported a 30% increase in cancer cases compared to the previous year, specifically noting rises in breast, cervical, and digestive tract cancers. To combat these trends, medical experts are emphasizing lifestyle changes and early diagnostic measures, such as annual mammograms and cytology tests.

In response to regional healthcare needs, the public health system in Monagas reported conducting over 234,000 free paraclinical exams during 2026 through the state hospital network and Barrio Adentro centers, supported by investments in technological supplies and laboratory reagents.
