Monash University study finds statins reduce heart risk in seniors

A decade-long randomized controlled trial conducted by Monash University researchers has found that daily statin use reduces the risk of a first major cardiovascular event by 30 percent in healthy adults aged 70 and over. The study, which involved nearly 10,000 participants, addresses a long-standing gap in medical evidence regarding the preventive efficacy of statins in older populations.

Previously, much of the research on statins focused on younger individuals or those who had already experienced a cardiac event. This trial, published in the New England Journal of Medicine and presented at the European Society of Cardiology Congress, specifically targeted otherwise healthy, independent seniors. Researchers noted that the treatment showed no significant increase in serious side effects, suggesting that clinical guidelines for managing cardiovascular risk in the elderly may need to be updated.
