Monesterio tree pits show significant deficiencies, environmental group finds
The environmental association Cúriga – Ecologistas en Acción Monesterio has identified 202 deficient tree pits in Monesterio as part of the national ‘Aquí falta un árbol’ (A tree is missing here) campaign. The study, which covered approximately 90% of the municipality's urban area, found that 130 pits are empty, 40 contain stumps or dead trees, and about 30 are described as suffocating the existing trees.
Local representative Juan Carlos Giraldo noted that at least 30 empty pits have been covered with asphalt or concrete by either residents or the city council. The association highlighted issues with urban planning, noting that some pits are too small for the trees planted in them, which can damage both the vegetation and the pavement. The campaign aims to register empty pits, stumps, and areas lacking sufficient shade to improve urban greenery management.
