Spanish urban tree mapping identifies 148,000 sites
Overview
The nationwide citizen science campaign ‘Ecomapeo Estatal – ¡Aquí falta un árbol!’ (Statewide Ecomapping – ‘Here a tree is missing!’) was conducted on October 3 and 4, 2026. Supported by organizations including Greenpeace, Alianza por el Clima, Intermón Oxfam, and Ecologistas en Acción, the initiative expanded to include 2,145 volunteers across 315 municipalities.
The mapping effort, titled ‘¡Aquí falta un árbol!–Ecomapa 2026’, identified over 148,000 problematic urban forestry sites, described as ‘black spots’. The data revealed significant greenery deficiencies, specifically 44,882 empty or paved-over tree pits, 27,116 pits containing stumps or dead trees, and 76,164 sites where tree roots are ‘suffocating’ due to restrictions from concrete or resin. These findings were highlighted as critical following record-breaking summer temperatures in the region.
Local results continue to emerge across the country. In Cuenca, volunteers mapped over 400 problematic sites, including 184 dead stumps, 168 empty or paved-over pits, and 68 trees with restricted root space. In Monesterio, the association Cúriga – Ecologistas en Acción Monesterio reported that their study, covering approximately 90% of the municipality, identified 130 empty pits, 40 containing stumps or dead trees, and roughly 30 where trees are suffocating. Local representative Juan Carlos Giraldo noted that at least 30 empty pits have been covered with asphalt or concrete by residents or the city council.
Activists plan to present these findings to municipal governments to advocate for more ambitious urban forestry plans. Demands include better replanting strategies, the use of permeable surfaces, and less aggressive pruning to combat heat island effects, improve biodiversity, and enhance city habitability.
