Monet film starring Kento Hayashi set for 2027 release

The film 'Monet: The Painting That Crossed the Sea of Time' is set for a nationwide release in Japan on October 15, 2027. Starring Kento Hayashi and Mone Kamishiraishi, the movie is inspired by the true history of the Matsukata Collection and a Claude Monet 'Water Lilies' painting that was rediscovered in France in 2016.

Directed by Mojiri Adachi and written by Ryoko Kuwahara, the story follows a young man working at a shipyard in Kobe in 2016. As he investigates a mysterious photograph left by Kojiro Matsukata, the first president of Kawasaki Heavy Industries, he uncovers the legacy of the art collection that formed the foundation of the National Museum of Western Art.

The production is a collaboration between Toei, Minato Studio, and Kawasaki Heavy Industries, which is serving as a special sponsor to commemorate its 130th anniversary. Filming was conducted on location at the Kawasaki Heavy Industries Kobe Works.
