Monica Esposito funeral sparks city‑wide mourning in Modena
On 28 July 2026 the funeral of Monica Esposito was held at the Abbey of Nonantola. The ceremony was attended by roughly 1,000 people, including the mayors of Modena, Nonantola and Ravarino, regional councilors, police officials and other local authorities, while national representatives were absent.
The city of Modena declared a day of mourning: municipal flags were flown at half‑mast, public events were suspended and a moment of silence was observed. The political movement Futuro Nazionale also marked the occasion with a minute of silence and called for harsher penalties and stricter immigration controls in response to the May 16 attack that killed Monica after two months of injuries. Her husband, Angelo Ciccarelli, who survives in a wheelchair, and her son Salvatore attended the service; the son read a moving letter to his mother.
Monica Esposito died from injuries sustained when a vehicle driven by Salim El Koudri ploughed into a crowd on 16 May 2026 in Modena, an incident that also injured several others.
