Modena attack and citywide mourning

Entities: Futuro Nazionale · Salvatore Esposito · Massimo Mezzetti · Monica Esposito · Salim El Koudri

Overview

On 16 May 2026 a vehicle driven by Salim El Koudri ploughed into a crowd in central Modena, badly injuring several people, including 55‑year‑old Monica Esposito. She remained unconscious in intensive care for more than two months and died on 22 July 2026.

The city proclaimed an official day of mourning: municipal flags were flown at half‑mast, public events were suspended, and a moment of silence was observed.

A funeral ceremony was held on 28 July at the Abbey of Nonantola, led by Mayor Massimo Mezzetti. Roughly a thousand people attended, including the mayors of Modena, Nonantola and Ravarino, regional councilors and police officials; national representatives were absent. A wreath of red roses was placed on the coffin, white balloons were released, and Monica’s husband Angelo Ciccarelli, who uses a wheelchair, and their son Salvatore were present. Salvatore read a moving letter to his mother during the service.

The Futuro Nazionale movement marked the occasion with a minute of silence and reiterated calls for stricter immigration controls and harsher penalties for serious crimes, linking its message to the May 16 attack.
