Monsanto wins Missouri jury verdict regarding Roundup herbicide
A Missouri Circuit Court jury has unanimously ruled in favor of Monsanto, a subsidiary of Bayer, in a lawsuit involving the glyphosate-based herbicide Roundup. The verdict follows a June 2026 U.S. Supreme Court decision in Monsanto v. Durnell, which limited state-level lawsuits based on failure-to-warn claims when federal regulations are established.
The plaintiffs in this case, three women, alleged that the product caused non-Hodgkin lymphoma and brought charges of design defect, fraud, and negligence. The jury rejected all three allegations after approximately two hours of deliberation.
Bayer reported that its shares rose up to 5.2% in European trading following the news. Bill Dodero, Monsanto’s U.S. legal director and global head of litigation, stated the result sends a strong signal that future plaintiffs will face significant challenges in court. While the International Agency for Research on Cancer classifies glyphosate as probably carcinogenic to humans, Bayer maintains the product is safe, citing scientific studies and regulatory approvals from the U.S. and EU.
