Monsoon rainfall deficits reported in Manipur and Rajasthan

Several Indian states are facing significant monsoon rainfall deficits, raising concerns regarding water security and agricultural stability.

In Manipur, August rainfall plummeted to 49% below normal levels, with the state receiving only 99.1 mm against the expected 194.8 mm. While July saw excess rainfall, the overall pattern has become increasingly erratic, characterized by short, intense spells followed by prolonged dry periods. Experts suggest that El Nino may be contributing to the weakening of the southwest monsoon.

Similarly, Rajasthan has recorded a 21.16% rainfall deficit for the current monsoon season. Data indicates the state received 295.30 mm of rain between June 1 and September 3, compared to the normal 374.55 mm. While a few districts reported surplus rainfall, 21 districts have recorded deficiencies. Former Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot has urged the state government to implement early drought preparedness and contingency plans to mitigate impacts on livestock, drinking water, and agriculture.
