Delhi-NCR hit by heavy monsoon rain, traffic snarls and alerts across northern India

Early on August 6, the Delhi National Capital Region experienced light to moderate showers that brought temporary relief from humidity but also caused water‑logging, traffic snarls and slower commutes. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a yellow alert for Delhi and an orange alert for nearby Gurugram and Faridabad, warning of intermittent heavy rain and thunderstorms.

The monsoon system is expected to persist, with the IMD forecasting widespread heavy to very heavy rainfall across many states, including Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Odisha, Kerala, and the Gangetic plains. Specific districts in Uttar Pradesh such as Prayagraj, Etawah and Varanasi were highlighted for heavy to very heavy rain, and a yellow alert was issued for 20 districts of western Uttar Pradesh.

In Kerala, the rains have caused severe flooding, leaving 26 people dead, 11 injured and four missing, while relief camps shelter over 27,000 residents. In Gurugram, persistent water‑logging prompted the Haryana government to transfer Municipal Commissioner Pradeep Dahiya to Rohtak.

Authorities across the region have urged residents to exercise caution while travelling, avoid water‑logged roads, and, where possible, work from home to ease emergency response.
