Monsoon rains trigger flooding and dam releases in India

Heavy monsoon rains have triggered flooding and safety concerns across parts of central and western India. In the Gwalior-Chambal region, intense rainfall has caused rivers to swell, leading to the deaths of two men who were swept away by the currents of the Asan River in Morena. Local authorities have issued a yellow alert for continued moderate to heavy rainfall over the next three days. In Datia, rising water levels have submerged bridges and disrupted daily life, prompting the closure of schools.

In Rajasthan, the monsoon remains active with heavy rain alerts issued for 12 districts. Significant rainfall in areas like Jaipur has led to increased water levels in major reservoirs. To manage the influx, authorities have opened gates at several dams, including the Navnera dam in Kota, which is releasing over 25,000 cusecs of water. While the rain has provided relief from heat in southern and eastern Rajasthan, officials remain on high alert near rivers and dams. Meteorologists predict a weakening of monsoon activity starting August 28.
