Mont Blanc glaciers show signs of extreme fragility due to climate crisis
The Mont Blanc massif is showing increasing signs of fragility due to the climate crisis, according to findings from the 2026 Glacier Caravan organized by Legambiente, Cipra Italia, and the Italian Glaciological Foundation.
In the Val Veny area, the Miage Glacier has lowered by an average of 15 meters since 2020, a loss of volume comparable to a five-story building. The surrounding landscape is experiencing increased debris flows, collapses, deformed moraines, and the formation of new lakes.
Significant concern remains regarding the Planpincieux Glacier in Val Ferret. This glacier is under constant observation due to its instability; it has reached movement speeds of up to two meters per day during critical summer periods, including in July of this year. Since 2019, the Val Ferret road has faced intermittent closures due to the risk of glacial mass detachment.
Environmental groups are calling for constant monitoring, increased scientific research funding, and improved mitigation and adaptation policies to manage the risks posed by high-altitude instability to local communities.
