Mont Blanc hiking access may soon require reservations to combat overcrowding

Authorities in the French Alps are considering new access restrictions for the Mont Blanc massif to combat overcrowding and environmental degradation. Jean-Marc Peillex, the Mayor of Saint-Gervais-les-Bains, has proposed that starting in the spring, hikers on the Tour du Mont Blanc (TMB) may be required to hold reservations in mountain huts or authorized bivouac zones.

Local officials aim to implement these measures through a combination of controls and sanctions to manage the approximately 80,000 people who traverse the 170-kilometer route annually. While Saint-Gervais-les-Bains is a key starting point, several other municipalities along the French section of the route are collaborating to establish these new regulations.

In Switzerland, officials have not yet planned similar restrictions for the Mont Blanc route, though Joachim Rausis, the Mayor of Orsières, noted the need for better coordination and order. However, some Swiss regions are already managing high visitor numbers through different means; for example, access to Oeschinensee requires a pre-booked ticket during the peak summer season.
