Mont Blanc tourism and environmental management

Overview

Authorities in the Mont Blanc region are implementing new measures to address environmental degradation and overcrowding caused by high tourism volumes.

In August 2026, new regulations were enacted in the Mont Blanc Nature Reserve prohibiting camping and bivouacking below an altitude of 2,500 meters. This ban specifically targets popular areas around mountain lakes to mitigate issues such as waste, unauthorized toilets, and fire risks. Mailys Doucet, manager of the Contamines-Montjoie Nature Reserve, stated that the increase in trail running and bivouacking has left “very little tranquil space for local wildlife.” To manage compliance, patrols have been deployed, and hikers are restricted to two designated areas with a capacity of 90 tents.

Following these environmental protections, local officials in the French Alps are considering broader access restrictions for the Tour du Mont Blanc (TMB) route. Jean-Marc Peillex, the Mayor of Saint-Gervais-les-Bains, proposed that hikers may soon be required to hold reservations in mountain huts or authorized bivouac zones to manage the approximately 80,000 annual visitors. While several French municipalities are collaborating on these potential controls and sanctions, Swiss officials have not yet planned similar restrictions for the Mont Blanc route, though there is a noted need for better coordination.
