Mont Blanc imposes camping ban below 2,500 meters

New regulations have been implemented near Mont Blanc to combat environmental degradation caused by increasing tourism. This summer, camping and bivouacking are prohibited below an altitude of 2,500 meters within the Mont Blanc Nature Reserve, specifically targeting popular areas around mountain lakes.

Authorities cited environmental damage including waste, unauthorized toilets, and signs of fires as primary reasons for the ban. Mailys Doucet, manager of the Contamines-Montjoie Nature Reserve, noted that the rise in trail running and bivouacking has left very little tranquil space for local wildlife.

To ensure compliance, patrols will be deployed. Hikers wishing to camp must use two designated areas that can accommodate a maximum of 90 tents. Further protective measures may be introduced next summer.
