Alps face record rockfalls and glacier loss due to extreme heat
Extreme heat in the Alps has led to a record number of rockfalls in 2026. In the Mont Blanc massif alone, geomorphologist Ludovic Ravanel of the CNRS reports that approximately 450 major rockfalls have been recorded, significantly exceeding the previous record of 300 incidents set in 2022.
Researchers attribute this instability to the climate crisis, specifically the degradation of permafrost. As temperatures rise, the ice that acts as a natural cement within rock fissures melts, causing cliffs to lose cohesion. Additionally, retreating glaciers reduce the stabilizing pressure they once exerted on mountain slopes, leading to decompression and further collapses.
Parallel to the rockfall crisis, Alpine glaciers are disappearing at an accelerated rate. Data from Legambiente indicates that the surface area of Alpine glaciers has decreased by 39 percent since 2000. Experts warn that glaciers located below 3,500 meters altitude could vanish entirely by 2050. The melting process is causing significant landscape changes, turning former ice paths into rocky terrain and creating new glacial lakes, such as Lac de Rosolin in France, which requires active management to mitigate flood risks.
