Montagna Grande wildfire in Trapani, Italy intensifies, prompting aerial firefighting

On June 13, 2026 a large wildfire broke out in the Montagna Grande area of the Trapani province in Sicily. The fire spread across roughly two kilometres of forest, moving toward demarcated public lands and drawing close to homes in the Ardigna and Fulgatore localities.

Three fire‑brigade teams of the provincial fire department, the regional Corpo Forestale, and Civil Protection units were deployed on the ground. Aerial support included two Canadair water‑bombers and four helicopters operating from Lamezia, Valderice, Palermo and Sambuca di Sicilia, while drones were used for monitoring. Despite the proximity of flames to residences, authorities reported that no evacuations were ordered.

The blaze follows a recent major fire in the Piana di Catania, and officials warned that high temperatures, strong winds and dry vegetation create conditions favorable for further spread. Operations to contain the front remain ongoing.
