Montana weather shifts from warm temperatures to snow and rain
After experiencing unseasonably warm temperatures this week, with cities like Great Falls and Billings reaching the 70s, Montana is preparing for a significant weather shift. An incoming system is expected to bring rain to areas west of the Divide on Thursday evening, spreading eastward by Friday.
Temperatures are forecast to drop significantly, with highs falling to the upper 40s. Snow is expected in mountain passes and high-country areas, particularly along the Northern Divide where snow may fall above 6,000 feet. This shift could result in slick driving conditions in higher elevations.
Looking ahead to the winter season, NOAA’s long-range outlook suggests a potentially milder and drier winter for Montana and the Northern Rockies, despite the immediate transition to colder, wetter weather.
