Montana wildlife officials euthanize two grizzly bears

Two young adult grizzly bears were euthanized in the upper Blackfoot Valley near Lincoln, Montana, following a ten-day period of persistent conflict with residents. Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks (FWP) reported that the bears exhibited bold behavior, repeatedly targeting unsecured attractants such as grain and unprotected chicken coops near homes.

After trapping the bears on September 9, FWP officials decided to euthanize them in consultation with the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service due to human safety concerns. FWP Region 2 supervisor Kendra McKlosky noted that securing attractants is a critical step for residents to help avoid such issues.

Wildlife officials stated that bear conflicts have increased in Montana this season because natural food sources, such as chokecherries, are limited, leading bears to seek alternative food in populated areas.
