Monte Morrone wildfire: Emergency crews battle residual embers in Abruzzo

Emergency operations continue on Monte Morrone in the Abruzzo region following two weeks of intense wildfires. While active flames have subsided due to recent rainfall and lower temperatures, authorities remain on high alert to prevent reignition from remaining embers.

The fire has consumed approximately 350 hectares of territory, impacting areas between Roccacasale, Corfinio, and Popoli Terme. Rescue efforts involve a significant deployment of personnel and equipment, including two Canadair aircraft, several helicopters (including an Erickson), drones for precision monitoring, and ground teams composed of the Vigili del Fuoco, Protezione Civile, and the Italian Army.

Local authorities in Sulmona and Raiano have adjusted water usage ordinances to allow professional farmers to irrigate fields on alternating days. Despite the current lack of visible flames, regional Civil Protection Director Maurizio Scelli warned against premature victory, noting that the thick undergrowth remains a significant risk for renewed activity.
