Abruzzo wildfires and emergency response

Overview

Wildfires in the Abruzzo region have caused significant damage and prompted intense emergency responses. Following an initial large blaze in the Aquilano area in early August, fires spread to Monte Morrone, affecting Roccacasale, Corfinio, and Popoli. While rainfall briefly slowed progress in late August, intense heat and wind gusts exceeding 100 km/h caused the Monte Morrone fire to reactivate near Roccacasale. Emergency efforts have involved the Vigili del Fuoco, Protezione Civile, and the Italian Army, including the 9th Alpini Regiment. Aerial support has utilized Canadair water bombers and helicopters, while drones and a five-kilometer firebreak have been used to assist ground crews. By August 31, the fires had persisted for 20 days, leading to a high-stakes rescue operation at Colle delle Vacche. A Civil Protection helicopter was required to evacuate 11 rescuers, including military personnel, volunteers, and firefighters, who became trapped by flames reaching two meters in height. Although the personnel were saved, vehicles valued at approximately 2 million euros were lost. The crisis has triggered a judicial probe by the Deputy Prosecutor of Sulmona, Edoardo Mariotti, and the forest Carabinieri. The investigation is examining the management of the emergency and the deployment of aerial assets costing roughly 4.6 million euros. Authorities are also investigating whether proper land reclamation was performed following a major 2017 fire, as charred material from that period was discovered during current operations. Local concerns persist regarding the proximity of flames to a pyrotechnics company and a riding school in Bagnaturo. As of September, following recent rainfall and dropping temperatures, the emergency has shifted from active flames to the risk of landslides and debris flows. Geologists have warned that scorched terrain poses a high risk for runoff, with Regional Civil Protection Director Maurizio Scelli noting that debris flows could reach roads and the settlement of Bagnaturo.
